A record $1.17 billion will be awarded in fiscal year 2027.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the largest-ever awarding of grants to help support veterans who are currently, or at risk of becoming, homeless. During the 2027 fiscal year, the department will release $855 million through the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families and $318 million through the VA’s Grant and Per Diem, for a record total of $1.17 billion.
“VA is making historic progress getting our most vulnerable Veterans off the streets and back on the path to self-sufficiency,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “These grants underscore our commitment to expanding critical services that prevent Veteran homelessness, connecting those who have worn the uniform to permanent housing and providing the resources necessary for long‑term stability.”
Supportive Services for Veteran Families funds will assist veterans and their families who are at risk of becoming homeless. It will also help veterans find new and better housing and support quickly rehousing them when necessary.
The VA’s Grant and Per Diem’s funds will support transitional housing and service centers, and provide funds for transition-in-place housing, allowing veterans to remain in their current housing before moving to more secure housing. These funds will also help with housing provision for female and elderly veterans, along with individuals who are experiencing illness, whether mental or terminal, and veterans who have minors in their immediate care.
